the real question about the future

As the world enters a unique period in human history the question we need to be asking isn’t, ‘what’s going to change?‘ The question we should ask is ‘what isn’t going to change?’

A range of global megatrends are colliding headlong with breakthrough technologies experiencing exponential growth.

The combinatorial effect of these, together with new generational mindsets, is accelerating change and creating disruption on a previously unthinkable scale.

From abundant energy to synthetic biology, nanotechnology, robotics, artificial intelligence, and the infinite extension of human life, the world is likely to change more in the coming decades than it has done in centuries.

The impact on human lives and experiences – health, education, work, security, finance, government, defence, communities, ethics, belief systems and ideologies – will be immense.

Despite the headlines most people have yet to grasp the enormity of the change coming their way.

finding the ulterior

Ulterior: existing beyond what is obvious, immediate or present; intentionally hidden; coming in the future.

Driven by underlying megatrends, technologies and mindsets , the future is being shaped by a range of interdependent and reinforcing trends. Mapping likely futures means going beyond the obvious, received wisdom, and even historic data.

What’s required is a level of creativity and plasticity, the ability to step back from rigid mindsets and imagine what for many may currently seem unimaginable.

describe a colour you've never seen

Although it’s integral to our lives, colour doesn’t exist. Colour is the property possessed by an object of producing different sensations on the eye as a result of the way it reflects or emits light. In that respect colour shares many characteristics of the future. The future is always a product of our imagination; our own subjective and collective views and beliefs. It is what we perceive it will be.

But the future is not somewhere we go, it’s something we create, and we create it by our actions. Our inability to imagine a world profoundly different from the one we now inhabit will prevent us taking the bold actions we need today in order to create the tomorrow we want to live in.

digital. de-carbonised. circular.

As we embark on the new decade three key trends are critical to understanding how we frame the future. The 2020s will see intensification of concern around sustainable business and economies in the new age of radical transparency of our lives and business operations. But climate change is not the only grand challenge facing us, and as the impact of resource scarcity becomes clear the concept and practice of circular resource loops and economies will become a new normal.

an appetite for the future

Ulterior Futures exists to identify and contextualise how likely future scenarios will impact the lives and expectations of human beings whilst equipping them with the information, insight and appetite to fully participate in its creation.

We work with individuals and organisations of all types and all sizes, in every industry you can think of, to drive a better understanding of what the future is likely to look like, and why and give them a language to describe it. We help create the vision and transformations that will benefit businesses, consumers, individuals and societies around the world and create sustainable value for the generations to come.
